Finding the right tree for your yard
- If you like fresh fruit and even want to try drying your own fruit, you may enjoy planting a couple trees. Here are some little facts that may help you find the tree for you:
- Right now, nurseries have a wide variety of bare-root fruit trees.
- If you are planting a bare-root tree, as opposed to a potted tree, plant it before the buds blossom and the leaves sprout in the late winter. This will help it grow to be healthier and produce more fruit.
- Recognize what trees are more susceptible to pests. Stone fruits (fruits with a pit) that ripen earliest in the season have the least amount of pests to fight off.
- Persimmons, citrus, and pomegranates have some of the fewest pests.
- Picking the right tree for the right geographic location is important. Some trees need longer amounts of chill-hours (period of time of about 32 to 45 degree temperature) than other trees.
- Some trees are not self pollinating and need another tree to cross pollinate with to produce fruit.

Bake Off Winners!
Many thanks to all of you who sent in a recipe for the Bake Off. The recipes presented to us in the bake off were so good, it made it difficult to pick the three winners. When we tried the spectacular Harvest Crumble, presented to us by Paul Decker of New York, it was an instant favorite and won first place based on our judging of: taste and quality, relevant use of dried fruit, and ease of baking.

Harvest Crumble
- 1 cup dried apricots or Dapple Dandy pluots, chopped
- 1 cup dried peaches, chopped
- 1 cup dried Bing cherries and/or cranberries and/or golden raisins
- 4 Granny Smith apples, cored and sliced (skin on), 4-5 cups
Mix dried fruit with enough water to cover in a saucepan and bring to a slow boil. Simmer until fruit is reconstituted and the water is absorbed. Mix with the apples and put mixture in a greased or sprayed baking dish.
Topping:
- 1 cup chopped walnuts
- 1 cup oats
- 1 cup brown sugar (more or less according to taste)
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 3/4 cup butter or margarine
- pinch of salt
Mix ingredients and sprinkle over fruit. Bake at 375 for 30 minutes or until topping is brown and crispy. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream. |
