September is here and you know how it works: The year’s stone fruit season is coming to a close here in California’s Central Valley. Seems summer came kind of late, tossed in several surprises, such as a heat wave during our blooming season and rain during our harvest time and left us with a lighter yield. Despite these challenges, you’ll be happy to know that while it wasn’t a bumper crop, the yield was victorious! Those tenacious Apricots came out winners with flavor, size and quality. Thanks to Mother Nature’s graces, evolving and improving farming practices and great people with us in our orchards, this season's light crop made some great fruit.
If you’ve been with us for a while, you know about our Apricots. They’re grown in an estate orchard that’s been in our family since 1943. Over the decades, our family has tended this land and have poured a lot of care into making this a beautiful place. It has actually evolved into a place of healing. What do we mean? While we won’t go so far to say this is an emotional sanctuary (some might say it IS), it’s a place where the earth is being healed. It’s a place of regenerative farming. We think our forefathers would be proud.
In this Regenerative Organic Certified orchard, we’re taking generations of farming practices to the next level by focusing on making the soil richer and healthier in a purely natural way. It’s a place where the air we breathe is being made better through our farming methods. It’s a place of growth, peace and well, just plain yummy fruit coming off of those trees!
Among the practices we incorporate are hand-harvesting our fruits (no fuel is burned for machines to do this job) and mulching our tree trimmings and cover crop back into the earth right on the same land where they are grown. All that nutrient-packed organic matter feeds soil microbes making healthy soil all while naturally fixing valuable nitrogen into the ground. Organic matter also increases the soil's ability to store and hold moisture so we can reduce the amount of water used for irrigation. This also means no fossil fuel is being burned to take these trimmings away for disposal or making burning piles that impact the air quality. Another big part of being Regenerative Organic Certified is being a fair employer and providing a healthier environment for our team. We hope the people who are out in our orchards with us consider their working environment to be a sanctuary of sorts. We do and we cherish those Apricots that are grown here.
