Good Things, Great and Small: Cherries and the Earth

Good Things, Great and Small: Cherries and the Earth

When June rolls around each year, farmers in California’s Central Valley talk about how the May weather may have affected their crops. It’s a given and there’s always something to talk about, whether there’s rain or shine, cool weather or warm, and so on. Even if the conditions were perfect each year, there’d still be no shortage of concern over a crop. It’s just how it goes with farming.

One of those crops is Certified Organic Cherries. It’s a crop that you may think of as precious and finicky. You’d be justified to think this way, but how can you blame those Cherries? They endure uncertain weather patterns while they’re getting ready to come off those trees and they are among the first fruits to be harvested in the season. So yes, while the Cherries may be holding on and hoping for favorable growing conditions, so are their growers! When you think about it, those farmers really do have a valid reason to be wringing their hands around this time of year. While we love and need that rain and spots of cool weather in spring, Mother Nature’s timing could make a difference in whether a Cherry crop is bountiful or maybe less so.

This year, our local Cherry crop is projected to be lighter than last year due to weather conditions and heavier productions these past two years. But as a consumer you need not fear; even though our area is expecting a lighter crop, those Cherries are expected to be high in quality, including larger in size and maybe with fewer aesthetic challenges. Even though most of those Cherries will be going to the fresh market, such as your local supermarkets, a portion of those will not. Yes, even now that we’re anticipating a lighter crop. Some of those fruits might not be the perfect size or shape to be presented in the fresh market, but you know those Cherries, though not as pretty, are still perfectly nutritious and deserve to be consumed.

If you’ve been a customer-reader with us a while, you know we’re big into upcycling. You probably recall that upcycling is the practice of making use of those fruits that don’t go to market as fresh fruits. In this case, Cherries are among the fruits that we upcycle by drying them. It’s a way we respect the earth and the many resources it takes to grow fruits. And what a coincidence: June is National Upcycling Month!

At Bella Viva Orchards, we upcycled before it was popular. We have been passionate about this practice since we started farming. In recent years, more growers, producers and consumers have caught on to the beauty of this practice, and now we’re happy that globally, the demand for upcycled, sustainable and responsibly-produced foods is greater than ever. While food waste still exists, as a global community we’re continually moving toward waste reduction while offering nutritious foods to you. Feel good about yourself when you choose upcycled fruits, ‘cause you’re doing your part in making the earth a better place to be!
