June is here, summer is right around the corner and we have been busy packaging our praiseworthy Certified Organic Pears. These beautiful fruits are grown in the local California Delta area, where the trees benefit from the peaty earth that holds moisture from the vast waterways. The warm – and often very warm – days in this area contribute to excellent sweetness and melt-in-your mouth texture. There’s a lot to love about these Pears. They’re packed with nutrients, they’re easy to eat and they taste incredible. What makes them extra special is that they are upcycled. Very proudly upcycled, that is.
For those of you who are just getting familiar with upcycling, briefly, it’s the practice of turning misshapen fruit into perfectly edible beauty. When fresh fruit is harvested it’s graded and the fruit that makes the first cut goes to what’s called the “fresh market.” What’s left is often strewn into livestock yards for feed or worse yet, sometimes even discarded. This is where upcycling comes in: We take that second choice fruit, like our Certified Organic Pears, that’s perfectly nutritious and dry it. The results are beautiful, real, Certified Organic dried fruit that you’d never know was aesthetically challenged at one time.
Upcycling is a practice that’s been around since the early days of fruit drying. At Bella Viva Orchards, we’ve been upcycling for over three decades, even before we established our company! As young people, we would go to area growers with our families and buy fruits that didn’t make the cut to go to the “fresh market” and dry them so they could be enjoyed any time of the year. To us, upcycling is a rescue mission that’s very dear to our hearts. We love making mindful use of precious fruit and the resources it takes to grow, harvest and offer you and your families.
